About the center

A global active learning resource for post-secondary STEMM educators

The ICAP Center for Teaching and Learning, based at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation, provides professional development for educators seeking a greater understanding of effective, evidence-based active learning approaches. Acknowledging the critical need to strengthen STEMM (which stands for science, technology, engineering, math and medicine) pathways, the center is focusing its capacity-building efforts on post-secondary educators in these subject areas.

The Center’s Vision

  • Serve as the pre-eminent global source of ongoing research and application of evidence-based active learning approaches, with a focus on supporting STEMM pathways at the post-secondary level.

The Center’s Mission

  • Advance research in the field of active learning through collaborations with education-focused institutions and organizations that can help scale the impact of the ICAP theory globally.
  • Develop, deliver and disseminate professional development for post-secondary STEMM educators to scale effective applications of the ICAP theory.
  • Encourage educators using the ICAP theory to participate in the creation of a global database of active learning activities that can help expand understanding and knowledge of the ICAP theory’s application.

The Center’s Approach

The ICAP Center’s approach is based on the successful application of the ICAP theory to learning effectiveness, which has been tested at all grade levels. Focusing on STEMM learning at the higher education level, the ICAP Center will create educator professional development resources that have the potential to scale globally and expand access to effective active learning approaches through:

  • toolkits and approach examples
  • in-person training
  • online learning modules

Additional research will be carried out to assess ongoing professional development opportunities and collect feedback to ensure their effectiveness. The Center encourages ongoing research and collaborations with higher education institutions and learning-focused organizations in support of these goals.
